Walls And Gates

The walls of the City have never fallen to attack. Betrayal, but never attack. Baked-brick and stone, they rise twice as tall as a man, with a top wider than many of the narrow streets of the City. Broad, squat towers overwatch the walls, and are themselves humbled by the mighty gates, with great cedar doors and gatehouses lavishly tiled with glazed bricks and murals to proclaim the strength and wealth of the city within.

The people of the City are so used to the safety provided by these fortifications that they scarcely give them a thought, comforted merely by their everpresent bulk.

Hooks

  • If you are a wanted man, it is not be wise to pass through the gates. It is well known that the King's men watch the gates to apprehend known criminals.
  • Sneaking over the walls is one way to bypass the gates. Bribing a guard is helpful here also. More brazen scoundrels pass openly through the gate disguised as beggars, peasants, or even noblemen in outrageous attire, trusting their garments to distract from their faces.
  • The walls are not inviolate, of course. Many of the poor build their shacks right up against the bricks, and some have tunnelled underneath for smuggling men or goods.
  • If you would ever need a catapult, every tower along the wall has one mounted on its top, yours for the taking; all you must do is get away with it.

Color

A lone sentry with a torch holds back the night. Great dun walls shimmer in the midday heat. The gilded lions and dragons of the garishly decorated gatehouse. Imposing wooden doors twice as high as a mounted warrior bar the way to foes. Bored guards slouch in the shade while crowds pass through. The King's thieves inspect traders entering the city for unpaid taxes. The grand red and purple banners of the city decorate the towers and gatehouses for holidays and parades.
